Somalia is set to enter the voluntary carbon market with its first-ever reforestation-based carbon credit initiative, launched in collaboration with UN agencies and Iroko Analytics.
The project, backed by the UN’s International Organization for Migration (IOM), seeks to restore degraded landscapes through large-scale tree planting, expected to commence by the end of 2025.
The initiative represents a major step in Somalia’s climate resilience and sustainable development efforts, offering a new revenue stream through carbon credit sales.
Authorities say this reforestation scheme will not only support environmental restoration but also generate economic opportunities for local communities affected by decades of conflict and climate shocks.
