Mogadishu, Somalia – The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change of Somalia, led by Lt. Gen. Bashir Mohamed Jama, held high-level discussions with German Ambassador Sebastian Groth aimed at deepening bilateral collaboration on environmental and climate initiatives.
The meeting, held in Mogadishu, focused on strategies to strengthen joint efforts in tackling climate change impacts, protecting biodiversity, and advancing Somalia’s green development goals in line with its National Climate Action Plan. With the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) set to take place in November 2025 in Belém, Brazil, both sides expressed commitment to coordinating positions and mobilizing resources to ensure Somalia’s priorities are represented on the global stage.
Lt. Gen. Bashir praised Germany’s consistent support, particularly in renewable energy projects, capacity-building programs, and climate resilience measures. Ambassador Groth reaffirmed Germany’s dedication to partnering with Somalia in addressing the severe environmental challenges exacerbated by recurrent droughts, floods, and desertification.
Officials noted that the strengthened cooperation is expected to include technical assistance, policy alignment, and support for climate adaptation projects targeting vulnerable communities. Both sides agreed to maintain regular dialogue in the lead-up to COP30 to align strategies and push for stronger international climate commitments.
