Mogadishu, Somalia – The Director General of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC), Abdirisak Ahmed Ali, held high-level talks with Marco Selva, Deputy Country Director of the World Food Programme (WFP) Somalia, on Sunday to advance cooperation in addressing climate and food security challenges.

The meeting highlighted the successful outcomes of recently concluded Letters of Understanding between the two institutions, which have paved the way for stronger collaboration in climate resilience, food systems, and sustainable development initiatives. Both leaders commended the progress already made in joint programs that support vulnerable Somali communities affected by droughts, floods, and recurrent climate shocks.

Discussions also touched on Somalia’s priorities for upcoming global forums, including the 2025 UN Climate Conference (COP30) and the African Climate Summit 2 (ACS2). The two sides exchanged perspectives on how Somalia can amplify its voice in international platforms to secure greater support for climate adaptation and food security measures.

In reaffirming their shared commitment, DG Ali emphasized the importance of building on the strong foundation of cooperation, noting that “climate resilience and food security are inseparable priorities for Somalia’s sustainable future.”

Selva echoed this sentiment, underlining WFP’s readiness to expand joint initiatives that align with Somalia’s national strategies, while strengthening community-based solutions to reduce vulnerability to climate-induced shocks.

The talks mark another step in the evolving partnership between the Somali government and WFP, reflecting a common vision to safeguard livelihoods, protect ecosystems, and ensure long-term resilience for millions of Somalis.
