Hargeisa, Somaliland – The Minister of Religious Affairs and Endowments, Hon. Sheikh Abdullahi Baashe Dahir Jama, who also serves on the National Drought Response Committee, briefed the 37th Session of the Council of Ministers on the current status of drought relief operations across the country.

The session, chaired by Vice President and Acting President Mohamed Ali Aw Abdi at the Presidential Palace in Hargeisa, focused on evaluating the progress of national emergency interventions amid fluctuating weather conditions.

Abdullahi reported that recent rainfall has been received in several regions, offering temporary relief to communities previously affected by prolonged dry spells. However, he cautioned that severe water shortages continue to affect parts of the eastern regions, where rainfall remains inadequate and vulnerable families still depend heavily on humanitarian support.

He detailed ongoing government-led and community-supported efforts to mitigate the crisis, including the distribution of emergency food aid, deployment of water trucks, and the rehabilitation of key water wells and boreholes. These initiatives, he said, are part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen resilience and ensure equitable assistance to all affected populations.

The Acting President commended the ministry and the National Drought Response Committee for their coordinated approach and urged continued vigilance as the government works to stabilize livelihoods, restore water sources, and prevent further humanitarian deterioration.

The Cabinet reaffirmed its commitment to supporting affected regions through sustained collaboration between government institutions, local authorities, and community organizations to safeguard lives and livelihoods amid persistent climate challenges.
