The drought emergency in Somalia has significantly worsened, with authorities reporting that 4.61 million people are affected by prolonged dry conditions throughout the country. According to partners, approximately 120,000 individuals have been displaced from their homes between September and December. Notably, at least 170 boreholes and shallow wells have become non-functional, including 71 in Galgaduud and Mudug regions, and 66 in Bari and Nugaal. Additionally, about 75,000 students have been forced to drop out of schools nationwide. This emergency stems from poor rainfall during both the April-June and October-December periods, further exacerbated by insufficient funding for humanitarian aid. The UN Emergency Relief Coordinator has allocated $10 million from the UN Central Emergency Response Fund for drought early action, targeting over 603,000 people.
