The Somali Federal Parliament has endorsed the creation of the Somalia National Meteorological Agency (SNMA), a measure designed to improve weather monitoring, forecasting, and climate-related services across the nation.
The legislation received approval from 141 parliamentary members, representing a crucial advancement in enhancing Somalia’s ability to address climate challenges and natural disasters.
The new agency will deliver timely weather information, monitor atmospheric conditions, and assist with national planning in essential sectors such as agriculture, disaster response, and aviation services.
H.E. Bashir Mohamed Jama, Somalia’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change, thanked the Parliament for adopting the National Meteorological and Climate Services Agency Act. The Minister also recognized the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) for its technical assistance in developing the legislation, noting Dr. Guuled Cabdulqaadir Artan, Somalia’s WMO representative, who characterized the approval as a strategic effort to strengthen the nation’s climate resilience.
Minister Jama stated, ‘The establishment of SNMA marks a significant achievement in forming a contemporary national institution that supplies dependable weather forecasts, climate surveillance, and scientific data to inform development strategies.’ He added, ‘This initiative will directly benefit the daily livelihoods of farmers, pastoral communities, and fishermen.’ The Ministry of Environment confirmed its dedication to implementing the legislation effectively, underlining that the agency will serve the wider interests of the Somali population.
