The Somali Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation introduced a specialized training initiative in Afgoye district focused on enhancing community-based irrigation management systems as a strategic measure for national agricultural modernization.
The initiative aims to equip irrigation committees, farmers, and water user associations with advanced techniques for water resource management and fair distribution.
The training emphasizes improving participants’ abilities in irrigation scheduling, canal maintenance, and establishing institutional frameworks for addressing water-related conflicts, which helps maintain stability and unity within local farming communities.
Through this initiative, the Ministry aims to revolutionize traditional irrigation practices into efficient, community-managed systems that enhance agricultural production quality.
The Ministry also focuses on boosting the irrigation sector’s resilience to climate variations, especially droughts and floods, by optimizing operational efficiency and conducting regular maintenance of essential water infrastructure.
The program is executed through close collaboration between the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and the South West State’s Ministry of Agriculture under the JOSP Project, ensuring coordinated efforts between government and community stakeholders.
The primary objective of this training is to reduce environmental conflicts and increase agricultural productivity, directly supporting food security foundations and sustainable rural development throughout the country.
