Mogadishu – Somalia’s National Independent Human Rights Commission has renewed its appeal for civilian protection and fundamental human rights safeguards after an incident in the Digta Margoos area of Lower Jubba region reportedly caused civilian deaths and injuries.

In a recent statement, the Commission expressed deep concern while monitoring the aftermath of the incident, having begun preliminary fact-finding and data collection procedures as per its constitutional duty to protect human rights and monitor potential violations impacting civilians.

The Commission reported that its monitoring and documentation teams are now consulting with local authorities, community representatives and relevant stakeholders to verify facts and evaluate the circumstances surrounding the incident impartially and professionally.

The Commission emphasized that protecting civilians represents both a legal and moral obligation under Somalia’s Constitution and international humanitarian law principles, urging all parties to avoid actions that could jeopardize civilian lives and safety.

Additionally, the Commission called upon security and judicial institutions to conduct transparent and independent investigations that establish facts, ensure justice, strengthen accountability, and prevent impunity.

Dr. Maryan Qasim Ahmed, Chairperson of the National Independent Human Rights Commission, voiced the Commission’s solidarity with affected families and communities, offering heartfelt condolences to victims’ relatives and wishing speedy recovery to the wounded.

The statement highlighted that respect for human dignity and the rule of law is crucial for enhancing social stability and building public confidence in state institutions, especially during the country’s persistent humanitarian and security difficulties.

The Commission also reaffirmed its dedication to continuing monitoring, documentation and reporting of human rights conditions throughout Somalia, while collaborating with relevant institutions to bolster legal protection mechanisms for civilians.
