HARGEISA The Ministry of Resettlement and Humanitarian Affairs of Somaliland convened a high-level coordination meeting today, marking its second edition, to review and expedite implementation processes for the “Youth Economic Empowerment for Internally Displaced Persons” initiative, a strategic move designed to improve living conditions and create sustainable development prospects for the most vulnerable populations.

Hosted in the capital Hargeisa, the meeting centered on thoroughly and objectively assessing the project’s progress since its launch, examining existing field and logistical obstacles, and establishing effective strategies and backup plans capable of fulfilling the developmental objectives set for this extensive humanitarian initiative.

The Somaliland government underscored the vital importance of strengthening inter-institutional partnerships and role integration during the gathering, emphasizing the need for coordinated cooperation to align and guide efforts between the Ministry of Resettlement and Humanitarian Affairs, the National Organization for Women, and the Youth Development Fund to maximize effectiveness.

Attendees concurred on the essential nature of integrating initiatives focused on broadening economic opportunities, establishing sustainable employment pathways, and enabling internally displaced youth to acquire production resources, guaranteeing their conversion into dynamic forces that promote economic advancement and enhance social progress nationwide.

Participants explained that enhancing the self-sufficiency of displaced youth forms the foundation for constructing a sustainable and stable future, with the project intending to provide beneficiaries with entrepreneurial abilities, vocational knowledge, and the tools needed to attain independence and make meaningful contributions to their local communities.

This ongoing humanitarian effort aims to reduce the adverse effects of internal displacement and address structural labor market disparities through targeted financial support and training programs that correspond with youth ambitions and meet the practical needs of Somaliland’s local production and commercial sectors.

The meeting concluded with widespread agreement and the establishment of shared commitments to improve coordination between partner organizations, quickening the implementation pace of the project’s field activities, to guarantee complete transparency and deliver measurable improvements to the quality of life for vulnerable communities.

Assessment reports revealed that the collaborative efforts of government bodies, women’s organizations, and youth funds in this initiative represent a progressive framework for integrated development in Somaliland, moving beyond short-term relief measures to create innovative and sustainable approaches to humanitarian challenges.

This accelerated development approach in Somaliland demonstrates a deep recognition of the connection between youth economic empowerment and the achievement of comprehensive social harmony and stability. Addressing the internally displaced persons’ situation through vocational rehabilitation and economic integrationinstead of ongoing dependence on aid packagesmarks a significant change in the humanitarian and development philosophy embraced by Hargeisa authorities to strengthen self-reliance foundations. This exemplary institutional experience presents international donors and partners with an authentic obligation to increase financial backing for these sustainable funds and initiatives, viewing them as the primary investment capable of converting inactive youth potential in displacement camps into a catalyst for constructing a robust national economy.
