MOGADISHU – An ambitious regional higher education initiative was unveiled in Somalia’s capital city, focusing on advancing renewable energy education and promoting sustainable development throughout Sub-Saharan Africa. This program receives financial support from the European Union as part of its Capacity Building in Higher Education initiative.
As reported by the Somali National News Agency (SONNA), this initiative represents a strategic approach to current energy sector obstacles, particularly the scarcity of dependable electricity supplies and the critical requirement to synchronize academic programs with workforce needs and the worldwide shift toward renewable energy.
According to SONNA, SIMAD University spearheads the project through partnerships with multiple African and European educational establishments. This cooperation concentrates on updating renewable energy educational materials, strengthening institutional capabilities, and fostering practical research to develop competencies among students and educators, consistent with national and regional energy objectives.
The launch ceremony, held at a high level, was graced by the presence of European Union ambassadors along with various Somali federal ministers representing the environment, energy, and education portfolios.
As noted in a statement featured by the Somali National News Agency (SONNA), the Rector of SIMAD University, Dr. Abdikarim Mohaidin Ahmed, underscored that this initiative constitutes a forward-looking strategic investment, enabling young people and academic institutions to guide the energy transformation with expertise and effectiveness.
