The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) analysis indicates that food insecurity and malnutrition rates in Somalia will rapidly deteriorate by the end of March 2026, with 6.5 million people experiencing high levels of hunger and over 1.8 million children suffering from acute malnutrition.
Somalia’s food security situation is deteriorating due to the ongoing prolonged drought, water shortages, insecurity, conflicts, and historically reduced humanitarian assistance resulting from global funding cuts.
Although the Gu rains (April-June) may provide temporary relief, 5.5 million Somalis are projected to remain in Crisis or worse food insecurity conditions (IPC 3 and 4) until June 2026, including 1.6 million people at Emergency levels (IPC 4).
The European Union and its Member States serve as the primary humanitarian donors to Somalia’s humanitarian response. Funding is directed to prioritized lifesaving interventions in the most severely drought and conflict-affected districts, delivering essential health services, nutrition support, emergency cash assistance, WASH, and protection to the most vulnerable households.
