President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud welcomed opposition figures in the capital to alleviate disagreements surrounding electoral procedures and constitutional changes, prior to a National Consultation Conference addressing political matters, security concerns, and drought response strategies.

Representatives from the Somali Future Council and other opposition groups gathered with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in Mogadishu during a Tuesday lunch meeting focused on renewing attempts to settle the persistent political impasse concerning elections and constitutional amendments.

This gathering follows an invitation from the federal government to opposition parties for a National Consultation Conference designed to reconcile differences that have exacerbated friction between Villa Somalia and regional authorities supporting the opposition.

The luncheon conversations focused on national priorities such as electoral procedures, proposed constitutional revisions, national cohesion, the continuing drought crisis, and military operations against the extremist organization Al-Shabaab. According to a presidential statement, President Hassan Sheikh underscored the necessity of cooperative efforts and inclusive dialogue amidst increasing political and humanitarian challenges.

“Our nation’s future demands shared accountability and inclusive discussions,” the statement attributed to the president as remarking.

“The luncheon gathering organized by the President for the Somali Future Council precedes the National Consultative Conference initiated by the administration, intended to address the comprehensive state of affairs in the nation, covering elections, Somali unity and solidarity, drought response, and counterterrorism efforts,” excerpted from a Villa Somalia announcement.

The forthcoming National Consultation Conference will likely concentrate on disputed constitutional modifications and the structure for imminent elections. Opposition figures have advocated for a deliberated electoral approach and expressed reservations regarding the speed and substance of constitutional reforms currently being deliberated in parliament.

Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre participated in the luncheon with cabinet ministers, while representatives of the Somali Future Councila coalition comprising authorities from Puntland and Jubbalandalso attended. The council has previously articulated concerns about the federal government’s methodology regarding constitutional reforms and the inclusiveness of decision-making procedures.

The lunch meeting suggests readiness from both parties to engage prior to the broader National Consultation Conference and could demonstrate a mutual dedication to discovering areas of agreement.

Beyond political deliberations, attendees addressed the humanitarian emergency resulting from severe drought affecting numerous regions. President Hassan Sheikh stressed the requirement for federal and regional cooperation to guarantee assistance reaches impacted populations.
