Berlin, Germany – Somalia’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Lt. Gen. Bashir Mohamed Jama, represented the nation at the Climate and Security Conference 2025 hosted at the German Federal Foreign Office in Berlin, reaffirming Somalia’s growing voice in global climate diplomacy.
The high-level gathering brought together policymakers, researchers, and international partners to examine how climate change is increasingly linked to global instability and conflict. Delegates explored pathways to build peace and resilience through coordinated climate action — a topic deeply relevant to Somalia, where recurrent droughts, flash floods, and desertification continue to threaten livelihoods and national security.
In his address, Lt. Gen. Jama underscored Somalia’s steadfast commitment to international collaboration, stressing that climate adaptation must go hand in hand with peacebuilding.
“For Somalia, climate change is not a distant threat — it is a present reality shaping our people’s survival and security,” he said while also calling for stronger partnerships and knowledge exchange to confront shared vulnerabilities.
Somalia’s decision to join the UN Group of Friends on Climate and Security was also announced during the conference — a significant step that enhances the country’s participation in global forums tackling the intersection of environmental and human security challenges.
