Mogadishu, Somalia – Somalia has emerged as a leader in Africa’s climate response, becoming one of the first countries on the continent to finalize its Third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0) and National Adaptation Plan (NAP).
The Somali government has announced plans to mobilize and invest $2.4 billion over the next five years to combat climate change and strengthen resilience in communities hardest hit by environmental shocks. The strategy focuses on key sectors including agriculture, water, energy, health, and disaster risk reduction.
The updated NDC 3.0 builds on Somalia’s earlier climate commitments and outlines a roadmap to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote renewable energy, and adapt to increasingly severe droughts and floods. The National Adaptation Plan, developed in close consultation with communities and partners, ensures local priorities are at the center of implementation.
Somalia’s ambitious move signals growing momentum among African nations ahead of COP30 in Brazil. The government is calling on international partners to match its commitment with funding, technology, and capacity support.
