MOGADISHU – The Somali Ministry of Justice has initiated a specialized training program for officers and personnel of the Somali Custodial Corps, designed to elevate professional standards and improve institutional performance within the prison and correctional sector.

As reported by the Somali National News Agency (SONNA), the program was launched by Minister of Justice Hassan Moallim Mohamud and Somali Custodial Corps Commander Mohamed Sheikh Hassan Hamud, attended by numerous security and administrative officials.

SONNA reports that this initiative marks the first specialized professional development course for the force, concentrating on providing participants with leadership and administrative competencies, along with instruction in military laws, regulations, inmate management, and correctional administration.

The Somali Custodial Corps Commander indicated that the program constitutes a significant advancement in enhancing the professional readiness and administrative capabilities of correctional sector personnel, with the institution planning to conduct similar training programs on a regular basis.

He elaborated that human resource development within correctional institutions is crucial for establishing more efficient and disciplined justice systems, thereby reinforcing the role of prisons in rehabilitation and reform according to contemporary professional standards.

In his remarks, the Minister of Justice urged participants to maximize the benefits of the training program, emphasizing the significance of continuous professional development in enhancing the performance of justice and security institutions and elevating professionalism within the Somali Custodial Corps.

SONNA also quoted the minister stating that the Somali government is placing growing emphasis on capacity-building and institutional development initiatives as part of comprehensive efforts to reform the justice sector and reinforce the rule of law throughout Somalia.

The introduction of this program reflects continuing endeavors to modernize Somalia’s justice and security institutions through investments in human resource development and professional training systems, contributing to the creation of more effective institutions capable of fulfilling their duties in compliance with established legal and humanitarian standards.

This specialized training program aligns with the comprehensive strategic vision adopted by Somalia to restructure and modernize its justice and security sectors.
