Mogadishu, Somalia – The State Minister of Environment and Climate Change officially opened Somalia’s National Consultation on its Second National Communication (SNC) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

This is crucial as it marks a pivotal moment in the country’s climate diplomacy and environmental governance.

The weeklong forum, held in Mogadishu, convenes key stakeholders from federal ministries, member states, civil society organizations, and academic institutions.

The goal is to ensure that Somalia’s upcoming climate report is informed by ground-level realities, scientific evidence, and inclusive dialogue.

Speaking at the opening, the State Minister emphasized that Somalia must take ownership of its climate narrative through a whole-of-society approach.

“This consultation is more than a reporting exercise—it is a national reflection on the challenges we face and the solutions we must pursue together,” the minister noted.

The SNC will provide updated data on greenhouse gas emissions, vulnerability assessments, and adaptation priorities.

It is a key requirement under the UNFCCC and serves as a foundation for global cooperation, climate financing, and resilience-building efforts.

Participants underscored the importance of integrating indigenous knowledge, gender perspectives, and youth voices in shaping climate policies that are responsive and sustainable.
