Mogadishu, Somalia – Somalia is set to take a major step toward climate finance and environmental sustainability with the launch of its first National Conference on Unlocking Somalia’s Carbon Market Potential. The one-day forum will be held on 7 October 2025 at the Decale Hotel in Mogadishu.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Lt. Gen. Bashir Mohamed Jama, who described the event as a defining moment in the country’s transition toward sustainable climate solutions and green economic opportunities.
According to the ministry, the conference aims to showcase Somalia’s emerging potential in the global carbon market while building the institutional and technical readiness required to participate effectively. It will convene senior government officials, private sector stakeholders, international climate partners, financial institutions, and development agencies.
The forum will explore frameworks for carbon credit generation and certification, the role of local communities and land restoration initiatives, climate finance mechanisms and investment opportunities, public-private partnerships for carbon market development, and the strengthening of regulatory and monitoring systems.
Lt. Gen. Jama emphasized that Somalia’s vast landscapes, reforestation needs, and renewable energy potential make it uniquely positioned to benefit from carbon trading initiatives. He added that the conference will also help integrate climate action into national development priorities while aligning with global environmental commitments.
The gathering is expected to produce a roadmap for mobilizing investments, enhancing institutional cooperation, and laying the groundwork for long-term participation in international carbon markets.
Government agencies, civil society actors, private companies, and international development partners are being invited to contribute to what officials describe as a historic milestone in Somalia’s climate agenda.
