Hargeisa, Somaliland – Somaliland’s government has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing the ongoing drought, with the Council of Ministers receiving a critical update on relief operations from the Minister of Religious Affairs and Endowments, Sheikh Abdullahi-Baashe Daahir Jama.

Speaking in his capacity as a member of the National Drought Relief Committee, Jama outlined the government’s response, emphasizing that food aid distributions are continuing to reach the most vulnerable households across the country. He stressed that relief operations are not limited to food supplies but also focus on long-term water solutions.

The minister highlighted that the rehabilitation of existing wells and the drilling of new boreholes are among the top priorities in the drought response strategy. These interventions aim to ensure sustainable access to clean water for communities that remain at risk.

Although seasonal rainfall has provided some relief in parts of the eastern regions, the minister cautioned that water scarcity persists, especially in the eastern Sanaag region. Relief operations there remain ongoing, with a coordinated and timely approach to prevent worsening conditions.

The Cabinet welcomed the update, reiterating that drought relief remains a national priority. The government pledged to continue supporting affected communities through both emergency relief and sustainable development initiatives.
