The United States has confirmed the restart of World Food Program food deliveries to at-risk populations in Somalia following the federal government’s acknowledgment of interfering with humanitarian assistance efforts.

In a statement commending Somalia’s admission of relocating emergency food supplies from a warehouse at Mogadishu’s port, Washington indicated it will maintain ongoing assessment of its “comprehensive aid approach” within the nation.

Washington recognized Somalia for accepting accountability for measures that impacted WFP activities, specifically assistance funded by American resources. In response to this admission, we will reinstate WFP food distributions while persistently evaluating our wider assistance framework in Somalia. The Trump administration upholds an uncompromising zero-tolerance stance toward any misappropriation, pilferage, or diversion of American funding,” the US declaration read.

The World Food Program confirmed that the compromised warehouse contained 75 metric tons of specialized nutritional products designed for malnourished pregnant and lactating women, female adolescents, and children.

Three weeks prior, the United States halted all aid to Somalia, claiming authorities had demolished a WFP facility and confiscated “contributor-financed emergency food supplies”.

Somalia initially refuted the allegations, stating that harbor expansion projects had not compromised humanitarian aid storage facilities.

Tuesday saw the Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirm that all materials removed from the warehouse “in connection with port development initiatives” have been restored to the World Food Program.

The administration conveyed its regret regarding the interruption and indicated that the WFP has been allocated a more spacious, protected warehouse at Mogadishu Port to guarantee the uninterrupted continuation of relief operations.

Although the Federal Government has sustained productive and positive dialogue with the WFP throughout numerous years regarding operational and logistical issues, it acknowledges the necessity of progressively enhancing coordination and information exchange with international benefactors,” the communication stated.

“In this context, the authorities will examine the particulars of this incident and implement measures to improve communication protocols to avert comparable situations from arising,” it continued, stressing its dedication to humanitarian tenets, openness, and responsibility, while underscoring its collaborative relationship with the WFP, the United States, and other funding collaborators.
